Dear parents & students,

Thank you for your interest in the James Logan Forensics Summer Academy! It is wonderful that you are exploring this opportunity to be a part of our critically acclaimed program. We cannot emphasize enough the need for your child to be a part of this academy and to begin their journey toward competitive success with us this summer.

Students in the program will have the opportunity to participate in all three branches of Forensics. These branches include platform public speaking, interpretation (competitive acting), and debate. The skills that students learn become increasingly vital for their future success in college and beyond, in fact they are life skills. Your child’s attendance at the Summer Academy is a vital step forward toward their realizing this success.

Academy Design
June 24 - June 28, 2024

1 week - Speech and/or Debate

This camp is prioritized for:

• Incoming students to the JLHS Forensics program (grades 9-12)

• NHUSD students interested in competing in speech & debate (grades 7+)

• Students will be enrolled as NHUSD students in Fall 2024

This camp is also open to returning James Logan Forensics students who already have competitive success on the varsity level.

Our goal is to ensure that every competitor coming out of the camp has been exposed to everything that Forensics has to offer and has had adequate time to select their primary areas of emphasis before the demands of the school year begin.

Location

The camp will be in person at Lames Logan High School, 1800 H Street, Union City, CA 94587. Academy classes will take place in the 400s quad of the school with rooms 408 and 412 serving as the primary spaces.

Staff

The Summer Academy will be led by the Directors of Forensics at James Logan High School: Justin Kurup (Camp Director). Our award-winning staff is joined by the Director Emeritus of the James Logan Forensics program. Dr. Tommie Lindsey, Jr. is a MacArthur Genius Award Winner, the sitting Vice President of the National Speech and Debate Association (NSDA) Board of Directors, and the founder of Rising Voices Initiatives nonprofit. They will help oversee a qualified staff of Speech and Debate professionals from across the country - many of whom who have coached multiple State and National Champions or have won high school or collegiate national titles.

All staff members are vetted and hired through the New Haven Unified School District and have many years of experience working in education.

Costs

Estimated costs to participate are subject to change depending on enrollment. Fees are used for staffing, necessary subscriptions, purchasing supplies and resources.

NHUSD Students: $600 per week, or $1,000 for 2 weeks

*This includes students who plan to be enrolled in NHUSD in the Fall 2020. At this time we are not able to admit non-NHUSD students to the virtual camp program.

Financial Assistance

Financial Assistance application is linked to the Enrollment Form. You can submit your request at the same time. Friends of Forensics (nonprofit 501(c)3) is able to offer limited financial assistance for New Haven Unified students. Partial scholarships are not guaranteed and are given on a first come, first serve basis. Please contact us for scholarship information. All applications are due by June 10, 2022.

Cancellations

All cancellations must be made in writing. Any cancellations made within two weeks of the Summer Academy start date will be refunded less a $50 nonrefundable deposit fee. All cancellations made within 48 hours of the start date will not be refunded.

In the case of low enrollment, we reserve the right to cancel the Summer Academy and issue full refunds to those who have registered. Notification of any cancellation of camp will happen at least a week in advance to the start date of camp.

Enrollment

Open Enrollment begins April 1, 2024 and will continue until June 10, 2024 or when the camp is full (whichever comes first).

To enroll, parent/guardians must complete a Summer Academy Enrollment Form (coming soon!). Space is limited! To ensure your child's spot please submit Registration Payment as soon as possible.

Your Summer Academy participation also helps fund Friends of Forensics, a nonprofit that supports the financial needs of James Logan Forensics competitors.

Final Registration Dates

Final registration will take place on June 24, 2024. This date will be the first day of the Summer Academy and take place between 8:00 - 9:00 AM. The students’ parent/guardian must be virtually present the first day to complete any missing application information and waivers. Full payment must be received by this date in order to students to participate in the Summer Academy.

Any registration information that is made after Final Registration Deadline through the beginning of the Summer Academy will incur an additional $25.00 late registration fee.
